Shadows in the Snow

Shadows in the Snow is always fun to see, watch and take pictures of this time of year. Especially this year with so many of us have a good old fashioned winter to experience!

Most of us when hooking shadows in snow shy away from blue, brighter blue then we would normally think. However if you look at the real life picture below (and Tucker modeling for the picture), you will see the shadows are in fact blue with green.

In the inspiration for Christmas Eve, while an Art Deco card the shadows are in fact blue and some who have hooked this piece used blue for the shadows. First the original. . .

However, some shadows are in fact gray. But look at the subtle graduation of gray that we may miss without the a photograph. The gray is darkest by the trunk of the tree but whispers out to a light gray for the branches. Something to consider when hooking gray shadows. See Silent Night hooked below.

Now sometimes for depth you need a combo. . .grays, blues and a hint of pale green to give depth and dimension like below. Also in the Window Shopper Vintage Postcard pattern.

So when hooking snow shadows, you should pick your palette but “explore” all the different snow shadows this winter and keep your photos for future reference. You will be ready for your next project!
